The Hidden Story Of The Quakers And The Underground Railroad (Part 1)

In this episode we meet up with our Quaker Friends to learn about their Meetings, faith, and the Alamance County Quaker's role in the Underground Railroad. This is part of a multi-episode series where we travel to Snow Camp, NC and surrounding areas to discover some lesser-known history surrounding the Quakers of NC. In the first installment, our generous host, Ron Osborne along with his friends James Shields and Max Carter take us to the Spring Friends Meeting which was established over 260 years ago in 1761. It's here that we learn about the Quaker faith in the past and present as well as details about their involvement in slavery and differing viewpoints across meetings. Be sure to join us in the following episodes as well where we continue the journey and visit an outdoor theater space as well as a massive witness tree which was a stop along the way on the Underground Railroad! As always, if you loved the video like it and subscribe to the channel!

Exploring Formerly Abandoned Cedar Grove Cemetery (Historical African American Burial Place)

Cedar Grove currently sits on 1.8 acres of land in West Charlotte, North Carolina. It was once part of a much larger plot of land totalling more than 67 acres and was home to Cedar Grove Cemetery, a private African American burial ground. When the owner and caretaker, John S Davidson passed away in 1972, the cemetery was all but abandoned. Nature quickly reclaimed the land with trees and overgrowth taking hold and obscuring the cemetery from view of the local residents. Over the years, the cemetery was nearly forgotten until Che and his organization Save Cedar Grove stepped up to head revitalization efforts. Today many entities and volunteers gather to help maintain the cemetery and preserve it's history. Family members and descendents of the deceased come to pay respects and leave offerings to their ancestors. Walking through the site, you can't help but feel the magic happening here. Not only is it incredible to see the old burial plots and envision who rests there, but seeing the history being preserved and made even today reminds us that even though this site was once lost, nothing is ever too far gone. Just a little bit of love and passion can go a long way when it comes to preservation.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems Search For Answers (See What They Found By Shovel Testing!)

In the final video from our visit to the Hoyle Historic Homestead, we get to see ground penetrating radar in use alongside an active dig site. If you've never seen an archeological dig site, you might be surprised to see some everyday tools in use such as a shovel & trowel, sifting screens, and the trusty 5 gallon bucket! The Hoyle Historic Homestead is over 200 years old and it's certain that the soil here still has stories to tell. Marty and a team of UNC students and volunteers are dedicated to unearthing as much of that story as possible. Every day archaeologists all across the country attempt to piece together small stories about our past. What they find is often only part of the picture, but by using context clues, referencing other finds, and utilizing many different forensic techniques, they're able to determine the most likely scenarios and help bring new understanding to these historic sites. We're Murph and Kyle with Hometown Chronicles USA and we are passionate about touring the country to learn more about our culture and history. We'd love if you join us on our next adventure!

The Hoyle Historic Homestead is located in Dallas, NC. This 200+ year old home is the oldest known house in NC to feature Germanic construction elements and we were lucky enough to be toured through the home by Marty Gimson who was on site with UNC students to conduct some archeological digs to learn more about the site, which we will see up close and in person in a future video! Hometown Chronicles USA visits small towns, historic sites, and other places of interest across the country. Through our travels we meet tons of people who, together, weave the fabric of this country. Whether we're on an archaeological dig or just walking the streets of a small town, we love getting to learn more about our towns and the people in them!
